The Tikhii (formerly Daubikhe) National
Specific Sanctuary was set up in 1957 on an area of 23,000 ha to protect
ducks and other water and near-water fowl and their habitats. It is located
in the central part of Primorye in the interfluvial area between
Sinegorka and Arsenievka rivers with over fifteen natural lakes in-between.
TikhiiТs present area is 12.6 thousand hectares. Over the years, its black wild duck and common wild duck populations had increased, as also did those of the reed duck and lapwing; the mandarin duck has also appeared to become a common species, and the reed Anas (entered in the International Red Book) was found to nest in lake reed thickets.
